Water testing / Iron & manganese

Iron & manganese
water testing.

Measure iron and manganese in well, drinking or process water. Identify untreated and treated sampling points when you want to compare treatment performance.

Request iron & manganese testing

Vanguard’s previous water work includes iron and manganese analysis reported under EPA Method 200.8. For a new project, identify the water source, sampling point and required reporting basis. Past reports do not set a universal reporting limit for new samples.

Iron can be associated with rust-colored deposits or staining. Manganese can be associated with dark deposits. Appearance alone cannot establish which elements are present or at what concentration.

Plan a treatment comparison

  • Use separate sample IDs for untreated and treated water.
  • Identify the treatment equipment and whether it was operating normally.
  • Collect the samples under comparable operating conditions.
  • Specify whether the project calls for total or dissolved metals before collection.
  • Include any required analytical limit or water-quality specification.

Filtering a sample changes the analytical fraction. Do not filter or add preservative unless your project instructions call for it. Keep mineral deposits and water samples clearly distinguished.

Reading the report

Water results are often expressed in mg/L or µg/L. One mg/L equals 1,000 µg/L. Compare the result and your benchmark in the same units and on the same basis.

EPA secondary guidance lists iron at 0.3 mg/L and manganese at 0.05 mg/L for aesthetic concerns. These are federal secondary guidelines, not a complete health assessment. State requirements and health-based guidance may also apply; manganese should not be treated as solely an appearance issue.

Questions about this test

Can I request iron by itself?

Yes. Select Iron in the request form and describe the sample point and objective.

Can this replace a daycare lead/copper test?

No. Iron and manganese and first-draw lead/copper address different questions. Use the project that matches the purpose of sampling.
